Dr. Iryna Shurpiak, Rotation in neurology and rehabilitation, May 2018

In May of 2018 AUMF, in association with the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU), co-sponsored the training of Dr. Iryna Shurpiak, acting director of the Rehabilitation Institute at the Ukrainian Catholic University in L’viv, Ukraine.

She attended a competency-based course on Vestibular Rehabilitation at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, UT. This intensive, evidence-based, six-day course was designed for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialists, Physical Therapists as well as Occupational Therapists. The training emphasized the management of peripheral and central vestibular disorders including stroke and traumatic brain injury.

During her visit to Detroit, Dr. Shurpiak had an opportunity to visit three medical centers: Veterans Administration Ann Arbor, Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM) and Michigan Neurology Institute (MNI).

She became acquainted with the departments of Rehabilitation Medicine, Neurology, Physical Therapy, and Occupational Therapy. This allowed her to appreciate the care given to American veterans at the various inpatient and outpatient treatment facilities, and in particular the amputee program.

We are certain that the experience gained from these onsite visits have helped further the development of the Rehabilitation Institute at the Ukrainian Catholic University in L’viv and allowed it to ultimately provide the highest standard of care to Ukrainian veterans.
